Cuffs Representation Exam

Analyse how representation is used in the episode to create meaning for mainstream pre-watershed audience. (5 marks)

One of the characters, Jake, is represented as a white privileged homosexual male police officer.
We know this because the quote “I’m gay” illustrates his homosexuality and portrays that he is open about being gay which may encourage the audience to come out and accept themselves because Jake is showing how normal it is to be gay -Jake can be seen as a role model for many.
His character challenges the stereotype because normally homosexual men are viewed as being feminine and soft whereas Jake is a police officer which is a job that that can be viewed tough and violent.

This creates meaning for a mainstream pre-watershed British audience, which is before 9 o clock, because there is no swearing and only scenes that will make you feel accepted in society such as Jake being openly gay instead of making the audience feel unaccepted- an example, making the audience think homosexual people shouldn't come out.

  1. This is a fantastic response! You just need to be careful with regards to repetition.

    Reflect and Perfect:
When reflecting, please use a green text colour.
    - You are repeating yourself in the second paragraph, read through your entire answer and condense it. You don't need to include most of the second paragraph in your answer!

Remember that this in only a 5 mark question. You will be handwriting your responses, so keep in mind that you will be spending more time answering a 20 mark question!

  4. Good job Georgia! The content you have written is brilliant, however you need to focus on your SPaG. Read your response as it is written out loud and add in the punctuation/extra a few words/change the spellings that are required.

    Remember - Accept not except
